About Len Aitken

Working from his home in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Len Aitken produced his first passionate project: construction of light weight, fiber glass kayaks.  Inspired to fulfill all his creative urges, he took his love of the sport one step further and produced a film about the white water experience in kayaks. Since then, it has been one rapid after another in his film career.

In 1997, his son Brook, also a white water enthusiast, joined Len Aitken Productions, continuing the tradition of kayak to film. Brook is a producer and the primary cameraman for LA Productions. He brings both youthful perspective and "attitude" to his extreme sports productions. His experience with Hi-Definition Video using the Sony F-900 camera adds a competitive edge to LA Productions.

The first major opportunity for Len Aitken came when Hartford Insurance recruited the company to produce a short film about an amputee ski program in Winter Park, Colorado. The film was an instant success and was featured on the Today Show with Barbara Walters.

When Eastman Kodak saw the film at the New York International Film Festival, they chose Len Aitken Productions to produce their film on Olympic medallist, Bill Koch. The resulting film, Cross-Country Experience, took top awards at numerous film festivals and led to a number of sports productions for clients throughout the United States and Europe.

Len Aitken suggested a documentary to CBS on a Trans-Atlantic balloon flight. CBS liked the concept and contracted with us to produce The Impossible Dream. Although the balloonists flew no further than Iceland, the film won an Emmy for Best Sports Film of 1978.

The following year, it was ABC's turn. They asked Aitken to be Director of Photography for a second attempt to cross the Atlantic by balloon. This time the flight was successful and ABC had an historic first on film and a prime time special.

Len Aitken Productions then joined forces with Wind River Productions to shoot their first feature film, Kid Colter. The film enjoyed international distribution through CBS Fox, The Movie Store, HBO and Showtime and returned a profit to investors

Additionally, Aitken has been second unit Director of Photography for Walt Disney's Aspen Extreme and Unity Entertainment's The Destroyer.
